Metro will be making a change to their Metro SmarTrip card system beginning on January 8th. Once the change goes into effect, SmarTrip cards will not be allowed to have a negative balance. Currently, cards are allowed to have small negative balances. This has led to a loss of $25 Million in the past 17 years. To prevent this loss, Metro has decided to enact this change.
Regarding this change a statement was made by Dennis Anosike, Chief Financial Officer for Metro, saying “In an environment where every dollar counts, we are taking a common sense approach to ensure that Metro is properly collecting the value of the transportation it provides in order to reduce the demand on Metro customers and the region for additional funding”.
The Metro is recommending signing up for their Auto Reload system which will add value to your SmarTrip card after it dips below $10. This will help prevent low balances.
